The Liberal Democrats have been part of the coalition that has run Birmingham for the last eight years. During that time we have turned around the City. There has been a big Liberal influence on the council’s achievements. This is shown in our top six successes.
Council Tax
Labour put council tax up by almost 5% per year when they ran Birmingham. We’ve kept average rises below 1.5%, taking us from the highest tax of any metropolitan borough to the lowest.
Schools
Birmingham’s GCSE pass rates are up again. 58% of pupils now get five A*- C grades, including Maths and English, up from 49% in 2004.
Crime
Total Recorded Crime is down, exceeding our milestone reduction of 8.7%. Birmingham has the lowest crime rate of any major British city!
Housing
We’ve built 1260 new council houses in the last 2 years – the first in a generation. Our insulation and solar panel programme for existing homes is saving tenants an average of £684 per year say energy company e.on.
Roads
37 miles of roads and 118 miles of pavements have been resurfaced in the first year of our 5 year programme to bring all the city’s roads up to standard.
Recycling
32% of refuse recycled up from 8% under Labour – and we’re one of the few councils who recycles more than we put into land fill.
The Lib Dems on Birmingham City Council are achieving in coalition what Labour failed to do when they ran the council. We’ve improved Birmingham’s public services since 2004 and we’re committed to keep improving our city.
