During the last few months Liberal Democrats have conducted a massive public consultation exercise to identify the views of Birmingham people on the key issues which need to be fixed by your Council. Six key issues emerged from this consultation exercise and these will be our main aims for 2011. We’re calling them Six to Fix.
1 To beat the current recession.
2 To provide 1,000 new social homes by 2011.
3 To have a clean and green city.
4 To cut congestion & provide better transport for all.
5 To boost Birmingham’s Police.
6 To develop better access to higher education & training.
Beating the recession
The current recession has hit Birmingham hard. Liberal Democrats will provide support for young people & business by creating 1,000 paid work experience places for young people allowing them to develop their work and employability skills, by investing in Birmingham businesses and by ensuring that the Council Tax is kept as low as possible.
Provide 1,000 new social homes
We will ensure that by 2011 1,000 new family homes will be provided to tackle the housing waiting list by building 500 newly built Council owned family homes and by renovating 500 run down homes & bringing them back into use at affordable rents.
A Clean & Green city
Liberal Democrats are committed to making Birmingham a clean and green city for everyone. We will ensure that all fly tipping and graffiti is removed within 48 hours. We will continue to increase recycling rates and expand kerb side collections. We meet our commitments to reduce CO2 emissions.
Cut congestion & provide better transport
Liberal Democrats are committed to encouraging people to leave the car at home and use the bus or train. This will ease congestion on the City’s roads & cut CO2 emissions. To achieve this we will provide low cost off peak travel for everyone, we will introduce an economy rate young persons bus pass and develop new cross city rail links and stations
A boost for Birmingham’s Police.
Liberal Democrats are committed to reducing crime and making Birmingham a safe place in which to live and work. We are committed to boosting Birmingham’s police by putting more police back on the beat and by providing more Community Support Officers.
Better access to higher education & training
Excellence in education is the key to ensuring that people have the necessary skills to be successful in today’s complex society. We will aim to further increase in the above national average exam results in Birmingham’s schools, increase numeracy & literacy skills for all and continue to build & renovate schools for the future.
The Lib Dems are committed to making Birmingham a better place to live and work. Six to fix is our plan for the comming year. You can make a big difference to Edgbaston this year by voting Lib Dem on the 5th of May.
